Osprey Back and Building (again)

There are now two ospreys hanging out together on the nesting platforms at the Birch Run DEC ponds. I presume one is male and the other female. However, I did not see the “dark necklace” that usually identifies the female on either bird. They have been busy adding new sticks to the nest.

Stopped by the Birch Run ponds to see if the osprey were back. A pair were back and seemed to be settling in to the nest. The short trip netted close to 25 species, including the song sparrow and juvenile red-tailed hawk pictured.

Osprey Back and Building

I am so glad I decided to set aside weekend chores for a bit and squeeze in some birding because I had a wonderful encounter with this osprey. Though I am sure it was aware of my presence, it did not seem to mind me watching it. I spent about 30 minutes watching and got to see it repeatedly snap off branches and carry them to this nest. There was only one osprey present, so I presume this is the male prettying up the place for the female’s arrival.
The Osprey have returned
Sometime this morning our first Osprey for 2009 (CHECK) finally arrived. I have been looking for these guys along the Allegheny River for days and so excited that they finally arrived.

Osprey Dinner
Osprey with trees in the background!
This morning the black flies were unbearable and I didn’t do the birding like I would have wanted to do. Between swatting those black flies and driving around in my vehicle . . . . I saw my first Common Yellowthroat (CHECK) and Gray Catbird (CHECK) for 2008! I know many other great birds are in the area but I just couldn’t take it anymore and had to return to my vehicle.
