Afternoon in France Brook
Woke up to the sound of the irregular drumming of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (CHECK)! I love waking up to first of the year birds without even getting out of bed! I continued the day with the Eastern Phoebe’s singing most everywhere I visited. I even had one vocalizing next to my little platform on the side of the house where they use to nest!! Maybe we will have some baby Phoebes this year?
Red-tailed Hawk being chased by Crows
After work I headed down to France Book with Grace in search of some other first of the year things! The Mourning Cloak (CHECK) wasn’t afraid to make its first appearance known and Colt’s Foot (CHECK) were seen in most every ditch! We also heard some ruckus and sure enough those Red-tailed Hawk‘s were causing some problems again!
We had the Red-tailed Hawk fly right over our heads and soon after that the Red-shouldered Hawk (CHECK) started screaming making everyone aware of its presents. Just why can’t everyone get along? Vernal Pools had eggs in them . . . Beaver Pond had a Killdeer and Common Mergansers in it. Every day brings us something new to blog about!

Nice! We had something singing in the yard this morning (before dawn) that I have never heard before and don’t recognize….wish I knew what it was.

I think that is the tallest and lonliest Colt’s Foot I have ever seen! I usually see them in low clumps near the shady side of our country roads – I love their bright sunny color!
Neat flight shots of so many different birds!
