Allegany State Park Can-Am Dog Sled Race

Sled Dogs

Today the Canadian-American Dog Sledders had their annual dog sled race here in Allegany State Park, NY. I took this opportunity to capture a few pictures of these great team of dogs working together to reach the finish line.

What fun! I wish I could have been there to see them run. Number 11’s lead dog looks just like my dog, Luna. She would love to do something like this. I have thought about getting a little cart for her to pull around. I swear she knows what gee and haw means and we didn’t teach her. It must be in her blood.

  6. What an interesting event. I am surprised to see so many non-Husky breeds in the teams. This is a great winter for snow based activities.

  12. Boy, they do seem so happy when they are pulling a sled! One of the physicians I work with is fulfilling a lifelong dream of learning to sled and he so wants to do the Iditarod. In training however, he ended up getting a right rotater cuff tear and well… he still says he’s going back, though with a smaller team. :c)

  13. That is amazing! I just didn’t expect to see that – very cool! Did you read ‘Stone Fox’ when you were a boy? One of my favorite books to read through in an afternoon – made me sob!!! Your post pictures are so awesome!

@ Ruth – maybe its because of the area they are at? It was fun for sure!
@ letspaintnature – sure is, thanks!
@ Linda – that is the only way to enjoy life . . . enjoying fun things . . . then again that’s prob ½ the reason I am still single! Hard to change my priorities!

  16. When I had a husky during my Canadian days, I sometimes considered getting him a harness to attach a sled to. Those dogs are SO designed to PULL! He really did seem to be the only thing that made those Winters bearable. He was a blast.

  17. @ Joan – does look fun! Thanks
@ Lana – That would have been fun to do with XC Skis . . . just think how much ezer that would have been!

  18. Work dogs are generally happiest when pulling a sled, but the most obvious of “happy” are the huskies. My son, who is living back here in California with us for now, has two huskies. And they love to run! We’ve never tried hooking them up to a sled, but something tells me they would probably think they were in “dog heaven” if they were hooked up. Great photos, Tom!

Last summer I saw 2 golden retrievers hitched to a beautiful miniature covered wagon. Could they have been keeping in shape for races in the winter?
