Our Nesting Eagles
An adult Bald Eagle on the Nest
I got a phone call from a birding friend that one of our Bald Eagle pairs started sitting on her nest last week. After work I jumped into my truck and headed over to see if I could find the nest again. The nest looked a little different from the last time I saw it because a windstorm damaged it last fall. After spending the winter rebuilding/repairing, the pair finally was able to get their eggs laid. Young should hatch in just over a month and the young will be fledging from the nest by mid July. I just love this time of the year.

I like that scope shot!
I shared the wood frog video with my staff this morning. They all were in awe. Several are going to show their students. The kindergarten teacher’s theme this year is the Rain Forest. Her kids will love the video =)

How far away are you from the nest Tom, this would be very cool to photograph, if I could photograph birds 🙂

How exciting! We also have an eagle’s nest about 35mi. down the road. I’ve been there 3 times to photograph. Wish I had a huge lens. They’re so neat to watch! Our nest also fell last year during a storm and the eagle’s had to patch it up. I’ve read that the nests can weigh up to 2 tons if they are used year after year!

It is great that you have an Eagles nest to watch. We have one that we look at weekly too. It is so exciting to see how their little family develops. Keep us posted on your nest.

That’s terrific! I’m going to have to head out and see if “our” eagles are nesting yet. We have some at the Erie National Wildlife Refuge and at Presque Isle that I saw last year. Things are starting to get exciting again.

How awesome is that!! I saw a bald eagle in the wild for the first time last month while we were in northern Michigan. It was so exciting for me!!

@ Bernie – I was a very good distance away from these birds! I took it with my spotting scope and point&shoot camera! I couldn’t use any of the photos I took with the 400mm! I bet you would do great with birds!
@ Barb – thanks and they are so wonderful to watch! Actually, as noted above, I couldn’t use my big lens with this! I just used my spotting scope!
@ Greenbow Lisa – we have a few pairs in the area! Will try to keep updated with them but because of their location it is hard to monitor!
@ Linda – thanks and these guys normally start early! I have in years past seen them mid feb sitting on an egg. They sure are!

@ Mike – I drove about 45 minutes away from the park to view this nest! It’s a good distance away and I might return sometime once all the ice melts, when the birds are good!

Hmms.. picture quite blurry but manage to see it sitting warmly on its nest, must be quite hard taking a picture with it sitting so far away!! Can’t wait to see its young(s)!!! =D!

@ Chicago – Yes, they do normally use the same nest year after year but sometimes change is something unusual happens. Thanks

@ Nature Shutterbug – this nest is on private property and I don’t think I could come up with the money to do a webcam like this! Would be neat though!

You know what? Last summer I found a nest just like this – with two fledgling Eagles in it. (I was in the boat at the time and my pups were going crazy) so…. true story… I thought no problem I’ll come back later to get some shots and see how things are going. The bridge fell in! (which of course made no boat access.) It’s been out of service for the last six months. I giggled myself at the irony! Finally a nest of eagles and I can’t even watch. I’m green with envy! However, I betcha a buck, the eagles over on Kamloops Island are pretty happy for the privacy.

@ marvin – I would love to see Phoebe’s right now! Last year a very large percentage of our phoebe’s died from an April snowstorm! I really do miss them!
