Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.

Alright rub it in. I haven’t even seen a redpoll this year and you have them fighting to get into your camera view. Geez… The next thing I know you will be showing a video of a Hoary Redpoll and I will be sitting here crying in my beer.

@ Tom – thanks and just put my point and shoot on the ground where I thought these guys would show up! Hit record and for 22 minutes captured as much video as I could! Edited the clip down to the best of the 22 minutes and va voom! Real simple and no need to get anything remote! Not worth the money, just need to be creative in the placement of the camera!

LOL, Trixie – Actually, most all of the video software that I have been using has been the windows movie maker! Although the past few have been with a new program that I purchased called Vegas Movie Studio. It has its advantages but Windows Movie Maker is very user friendly!

OMG I loved that video-but it just showed up for me now-even though it says you posted it 1/2 hour ago! I love, love, loved when he stuck his face in the camera-he just wanted to be ready for his 15 minutes of fame!

That is just the cutest thing how that bird looks into the camera. I downloaded the trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 a couple of weeks ago and now I’m hooked on it. I’ll have to fork over the money because I can’t go back. I was totally confused and didn’t like it at first because I couldn’t figure it out. The tutorials they offer free are confusing but I found a bunch of tutorials by users on YouTube, of all things, that teach you how to use it. Your point and shoot has video at what resolution? I’m just snoopy.

Erie – does 640×480 sound right? For sure it is a great program and still learning how to use it. Although I am just winging it without using any of the tutorials! Let me know if you ever have any questions!

OK, Tom, I’m even nosier. What brand camera are you using? I have a Kodak Easy Share DX7590, and my toughest problem I have with it when using the video part of it is the focus. It doesn’t want to stay in focus. I also want to try using the Windows Movie Maker, but I can’t seem to get the movie maker to be able to “read” the camera’s video format. Oh well, guess it’s time to get the old camera handbook out. Maybe there’s a setting to change the video format so Windows can read it. 😉

I am a Sony and Nikon person! So, my point-and-shoot is the SONY DSC-W50 which is an older model! Young Naturalist J has a newer model of this camera and I believe Pam (nature woman) have the same model as YNJ! Focus can be tough on point and shoot cameras! Many times I throw away most of the video that I capture but with 2 gigs, my camera can capture 22 minutes! In that time I normally get something that is usable! Even in this post you will see the focus changing!! BTW: Macro is turned on here!! Hope that helps! O, O, my Nikon big camera is the Nikon D70s with a 100-400 telephoto (as in my picture in the upper right).

I just read the above comment about video-I had the one before Kodak the 6490 and we had to get Quick Time to edit the videos-but I don’t recommend it it was a pain in the ***!
