Another Redpoll Video
Check out the Jamestown Audubon article on Winter Redpolls written for the local newspaper! They emailed me yesterday asking to use two of my photos for the article! Thanks Jen and Sarah. This is an almost Wordless Wednesday video post!

Alright rub it in. I haven’t even seen a redpoll this year and you have them fighting to get into your camera view. Geez… The next thing I know you will be showing a video of a Hoary Redpoll and I will be sitting here crying in my beer.

@ Lisa – isn’t it cute how the Redpoll looks into the camera as if to be checking to see how its feathers look?
15 January 2008 at 7:26 pm
Sweet Video…Tom I’d love to know how you get these shots. Is this a remote camera?

OMG Tom! I love the birdie looking into the camera! As always, your videos are so cool, I love watching the birds eating.
Very cool on them using your photo in the article!
15 January 2008 at 9:27 pm
@ Tom – thanks and just put my point and shoot on the ground where I thought these guys would show up! Hit record and for 22 minutes captured as much video as I could! Edited the clip down to the best of the 22 minutes and va voom! Real simple and no need to get anything remote! Not worth the money, just need to be creative in the placement of the camera!
@ Pam – isn’t that cute? Thanks

I’ll bite…what do you edit the video with?
15 January 2008 at 10:43 pm
LOL, Trixie – Actually, most all of the video software that I have been using has been the windows movie maker! Although the past few have been with a new program that I purchased called Vegas Movie Studio. It has its advantages but Windows Movie Maker is very user friendly!

Congrats on the photos. 🙂

That was fun! My first virtual redpoll!
16 January 2008 at 2:15 am
I want to see a huge flock land at my windows! Nice video! Now if the Pine Grosbeaks would move a little more south…
16 January 2008 at 5:51 am
Congrats on getting the pictures published. Now, can you send a couple of those redpolls to NJ so that I can see one?
16 January 2008 at 9:38 am
We’ve only had one Redpoll at our preserve ever so this is really cool to watch!!
16 January 2008 at 9:50 am
I’ve never seen one of these–thanks for the video.
16 January 2008 at 10:00 am
Ohhhh ~ what a precious video! I love it, Tom. The redpolls are so beautiful. Congrat’s on getting your pictures in the paper!
16 January 2008 at 11:14 am
Nice video! Did you use a point and shoot still camera that takes video or a video camera to take this?
16 January 2008 at 11:21 am
@ Lana – thanks
@ TR – sweet!
@ John – Use thistle and they will come! Agree with the Pines!

I have a smile from ear to ear, sitting in this dreary office. Thank you, Tom! I love that little camera hog.

Oh Tom! The Red Polls are darling!
Never have seen them. We have the Purple Finches and the House Finches.
Thank you for the introduction.

OMG I loved that video-but it just showed up for me now-even though it says you posted it 1/2 hour ago! I love, love, loved when he stuck his face in the camera-he just wanted to be ready for his 15 minutes of fame!
16 January 2008 at 7:27 pm
@ Mary – thanks and he is a cute little camera hog wasn’t he!
@ Sherry – glad you enjoyed these guys! Purple Finches are great birds!
@ Marg – sorry but I posted this 24.5 hours ago! I do think he got his 15 minutes and then some!

That is just the cutest thing how that bird looks into the camera. I downloaded the trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 a couple of weeks ago and now I’m hooked on it. I’ll have to fork over the money because I can’t go back. I was totally confused and didn’t like it at first because I couldn’t figure it out. The tutorials they offer free are confusing but I found a bunch of tutorials by users on YouTube, of all things, that teach you how to use it. Your point and shoot has video at what resolution? I’m just snoopy.
16 January 2008 at 8:58 pm
Erie – does 640×480 sound right? For sure it is a great program and still learning how to use it. Although I am just winging it without using any of the tutorials! Let me know if you ever have any questions!
16 January 2008 at 9:46 pm
OK, Tom, I’m even nosier. What brand camera are you using? I have a Kodak Easy Share DX7590, and my toughest problem I have with it when using the video part of it is the focus. It doesn’t want to stay in focus. I also want to try using the Windows Movie Maker, but I can’t seem to get the movie maker to be able to “read” the camera’s video format. Oh well, guess it’s time to get the old camera handbook out. Maybe there’s a setting to change the video format so Windows can read it. 😉

I am a Sony and Nikon person! So, my point-and-shoot is the SONY DSC-W50 which is an older model! Young Naturalist J has a newer model of this camera and I believe Pam (nature woman) have the same model as YNJ! Focus can be tough on point and shoot cameras! Many times I throw away most of the video that I capture but with 2 gigs, my camera can capture 22 minutes! In that time I normally get something that is usable! Even in this post you will see the focus changing!! BTW: Macro is turned on here!! Hope that helps! O, O, my Nikon big camera is the Nikon D70s with a 100-400 telephoto (as in my picture in the upper right).

I just read the above comment about video-I had the one before Kodak the 6490 and we had to get Quick Time to edit the videos-but I don’t recommend it it was a pain in the ***!
17 January 2008 at 6:51 pm
I love your video and the camera hog esp.
I haven’t seen a red poll yet! Can’t wait though 🙂
18 January 2008 at 2:50 pm
Cute little birds. And I saw your saw-whet photo in the Buffalo News.
19 January 2008 at 12:48 am
@ Marg – I have also paid for quick time but couldn’t get it to work! I agree isn’t good!
@ Chicago – Isn’t that redpoll cute? Thanks and hope it visits you!
@ Grace – thanks and look good in the color like that!
19 January 2008 at 8:38 am
That is a great video! I love seeing them all together stuffing their little faces!
