Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.

She told this to me over the phone! She also said that is going to be in the local News Paper, a tad bit gory but good. The opossum was a cute touch 🙂

What a cutie! Just today I saw one mushed in the middle of the road. It makes me so sad.

That haiku made me think of the massacre I saw this weekend on the highway only it was not one but 2 large deer. UGH Not a good way to cull the deer. It happens often at this particular spot. They built a high concrete divider in a section of highway that traps all manner of animals. Sad.

@ Marg – Was going to do a video of the porcupine walking down the road but just didn’t get around to editing it! She did awesome!

Cute opossum and I am glad it is alive. I worry about deer when driving at dusk and dawn. We have too many in urban areas now.

I’m glad that isn’t the roadkill picture. I saw a possum roadkill on our way to the country yesterday. They just move too slow. I’m one of the people who think possums are cute. Look at that face!

I love that close-up photo of the possum. I didn’t realize they have all those long whiskers around their face. I, too, see many more dead ones on the road than I see live ones in my backyard. Sadly, I think some people go out of their way to hit them…

When we drove from Washington to California last month we noticed the highway is littered with roadkills. It was gruesome and surprising. Of course it is has become the vultures’ cafe, as long as they know to stay out of the way of traffic. Great haiku.

Possums are suicidal. They can be perfectly safe on the side of the road, but run under your car at the last minute.

My husband has been trapping the opossums that come into our backyard and relocating them to a safer place.
We see too many wild aminals killed on the road way in front of our house. He traps the raccoons too! They both really like stale donuts.
Sad but true haiku.

I have always thought they were cute. The last one I saw alive was back in the late 70’s! A babe that visited my back door one day.
It’s sad to see so many that don’t make it.

@ Robin – lots of roadkill! Aww poor things! I bet vultures would make a great haiku!
@ Pam – Hard to come up with something that gave the roadkill impression! Wasn’t easy but Opossum seemed to fit for C’s wonderful poem!

@ Sherry – I do that with raccoons/skunks but never caught a Opossum! I use old tunafish or cat food!

Road kill really pulls at my soul, as I tend to extrapolate it to a global level (i.e.; how many dead critters litter the roads at any given moment, worldwide.) <:( Sometimes I need to think less…
Love the ‘possum picture. That made me happier.

Such a lovely opossum! I love these guys, and it always pains me so much to see them as roadkill.

Well, I just had to add a comment here. Yes, I’m known as Possumlady to friends. I do love them so. I don’t know how anyone can think they are ugly. I have a number of them coming up to my front porch for dry cat kibble every night. I just saw a possum crawling down a tree for the first time. Very slow and head first.

They’re cool little creatures.I accidentally caught one in my have-a heart trap once. It wasn’t a pretty sight as the poor animal tried to bite its way out.
