My life is about living with nature – here you can live it with me!

Coldest day of the year!

Today was the coldest day of the year with a low temperature of -3.1F and a high of 14.7F. It is amazing how just a month ago I was discussing how unusual this warm winter has been. Now I am discussing how cold it is!! I have never seen so many weather advisories posted on my cell phone as I have in the past 36 hours. Snow just north of me has been getting dumped on by lake effect snow with whiteout conditions.

Of course the sun finally came out this morning and I did make an attempt to head outside to take a few pictures. I heard on the radio that the wind-chill temperatures were estimated to be around -15F and it surely did feel that cold!! With very few critters observed, I found myself only taking pictures of my snowshoes and then quickly headed back to the truck to stay warm!! Yesterday was equally as cold while snowboarding at one of the local ski resorts. Every few runs we needed to head inside for a short time to reduce our chances of frostbite (especially with the kids). But did have a wonderful day with everyone, thanks AW for the taking care of us!!

  1. Mon@rch, that IS cold. No matter how many layers you wear, your extremeties can be frostbitten within minutes. We had a very bad cold snap in Delaware a few years ago (-8 F) but I remember one Christmas Eve in MD when we had -25 F wind chill. Brrrrrrr. I sure hope it warms up for you!

  3. Brrrrrr!!! Love the tracks and your snowshoes! Glad you didn’t get frostbite! I love going into the ski lodge to get warm – a yummy mug of hot chocolate is always a great way to warm the insides!

  4. @ Mary – brr, was cold and glad I knew well enough to call it quits and head back to the truck! Now -25F is cold! BRR
@ Jennimi – I need to get some new boots – they have a big rip on the side and water leaks in now!
@ Pam – thanks and yep, me two! Could have used a cup or two but just happy with the heat inside the building!

  5. Love the snowshoes! When I think “snowshoe” I think of the old Tennis Racket things.

    Stay warm!
(Tomorrow, in lovely Ohio, we can expect 13 degrees with a -10 degree windchill…that’s warm, compared to what you have)

  6. It sounds a little colder where you are, but d@mn it’s cold down in South Jersey, too. I actually had to stop halfway through my 4-block walk to work from the train to get some tea – not because I really wanted tea, but I needed to thaw out a bit for the rest of the walk!!

You’re a brave man for heading out into the wilds in that… but at least you have nice snow shoes to be crazy in, right?

  7. We had a cold spell a few weeks ago, but not nearly as cold as where you are. Just down to around 18F. I had frostbite once many years ago. Definitely something to be avoided.

  8. @ Susan – brr it has been cold everywhere! Tennis Rackets could work with some people!
@ Marty – yes ,cold everywhere! just commented on your blog regarding the cold! Brrr! Then again it was my choice to walk, having to walk to work isn’t!
@ Robin – still cold and I have also had frostbite on my feet! Stay warm!

  9. We have the cold in Massachusetts but not much snow. Snow would make the cold more tolerable, imo. I haven’t been able to use my snow shoes so I envy you! Also admire your courage getting out in the cold.

    Very nice photos as usual.

I had to do a metric conversion to figure out how cold you were 😉 and hey we beat you by a minuscule fraction we were -16.6F with the wind chill, all I can say is it was BLOODY COLD!
