Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.

Hiya Tom! You know I love Downy’s! Great shots love it with the sumac colour.

Gorgeous! I had my first downy this past fall. My husband first spotted it visiting our then empty bluebird box, which sits very near some staghorn sumacs on our property.

The cutest of all woodpeckers. I have a pair of downys (or is it downies?) pretty much only in the winter. They love the suet. I love your photo. The black and white is set off nicely with the red sumac.

I love the downy photo. They are pretty common here, sitting on a nearby branch while I fill the suet feeder.

What a lovely contrast – the deep blood red of the Sumac and the black & white of the Downy – stunning shot!

Wow, that sumac really hangs on to its berries. And they’re so red still! Ours have all gone brown (what’s left of them). Super pic!

Great contrast and colour. I think I remember you saying that sumac was a bit on the toxic side for some birds and was only eaten when they were very hungry.
