Baby Birdies
Last Saturday during the Roger Tory Peterson Birding Festival we banded a recently fledged Song Sparrow with its father only a few inches from it in the net. This was my first nestling for the year and I know other babies will be found in numbers!
Commonly the father bird will continue raising the fledged young as mother starts building a new nest and then she will incubate her newly dropped eggs. This helps with the timing in being able to fledge as many nestlings in one season as possible. I suspected this bird was about a week out of the nest. Ironically we found over at the CLDC banding station a newly built nest with 5 eggs in it! No doubt mamma has been busy in this situation also!

Was dad worried as you banded its young?

I love babies birds.
I had a window strike today–a baby mourning dove. He sat there temporarily stunned (driving my one cat crazy), then shook his head, and took off–all ok.
