Allegany State Park Firetower
The weather was so beautiful the other day and with the leaves being at their peak this weekend . . . . I decided to try and capture some tree top photos from inside the Allegany State Park Firetower.
So many steps to get to the top of the tower . . . . ugg and it was a little windy!
It was well worth the hike . . . . I had the most spectacular view from inside the tower!
I happen to noticed a Nymphalis butterfly species hiding in the corner of the floor . . . . . OMG . . . it’s a Compton Tortoiseshell!
Of course I tucked my finger under the Tortoiseshell for a closer look! As soon as the sun reached it . . . the Tortoiseshell opened its wings and started sunning its self . . . . Wow, what a beautiful day it was the other day!
Compton Tortoiseshell opened in the sun!

Very nice! The last time I was up there there were no windows.

I’d say the climb was well worth it.Those shots are spectacular.Fall colors last such a short time.

What a treasure to find up in that tower Mon@rch. I am surprised that the fire tower is still safe enough to climb. Most of these old towers around here are not climbable any more. It is sad. I have always liked to climb way up there to look around. I always feel so alone. It feels like you find a secret garden. When occasionally a bird flies by or in your case finding a butterfly it seems like magic.

Spectacular shots, Tom. The butterfly fits right in with the great fall colors.

Awesome. Beautiful colors and a butterfly. Your after my heart Tom.

The color on the wings of the butterfly match the colors of the leaves. (Is this the tower over there on the Quaker side?)

Well, to show my ignorance, I thought it was a moth. Its body looks more like a moth. But it certainly is pretty — quite different from most of the butterflies you would see back east. And thanks for showing more fall foliage. I really enjoy seeing the beauty you can behold there back east. We Californians (at least coastal folks) don’t get to see the intensity of color like that. Thanks for sharing Tom.

Great post and great photos. Thanks for sharing!

Breathtaking–both the view and the butterfly.
19 October 2008 at 7:51 pm
Wow, what a view! And what a cooperative butterfly (even though it appears a little “worn” around the edges)

Amazingly beautiful!

I love the amount of reds your trees have. I noticed this year at Oil Creek that there wasn’t as much red. Can the colors change from year to year? That looks like quite a climb to the top. But I know it had to be worth it.

That’s a stunning view. Autumn at the peak of color, along with a butterfly who blends right in!

Hi ,
You get amazingly great close up photos holding a bird or butterfly (in this case)in one hand and the camera in the other. How do you do it and what type of camera are you using?

What a wonderful place to be! Great for pictures (so long as they keep those windows clean ;- )
Can’t believe how lovely that butterfly is when it opened its wings!

Tom–where have you gone? No birds? No butterflies? No fall scenes?
