  4. To be fair . . . it’s a very barn-like bridge!

  5. Beautiful bridge photo. Raising baby birds seems to be such hard work! Those poor parents have to put up with screaming, crying, and wing fluttering. They can’t get back soon enough, the babies are always complaining of hunger. They are so fun to watch.

  6. Wonderful photos, tom. The swallows do seem to work hard all day long to feed their ever-hungry offspring. I am always amazed by the parents’ efforts to keep those babies fed.

  7. This is great–watching nest in progress and junior birds giving orders to parents.
You got me, at first, on the bridge–I thought–fall colors now? Wow, then realized that you said a previous pic of the bridge that you had.

Those are great pictures in poor light. Are you using the Vivitar lens with the D300? Swallows are fabulous.

  22. My favorite is the baby with the WIDE open beak. Maybe the mom picked that spot because it was sheltered — or maybe for the aesthetic value of the setting.

  23. We have a nest on the side of the building where I work. This weekend it was attacked and the male was killed. It looks like something attacked it again last night. The poor female is trying to sit on the eggs (if there are some). This is the second time a male was killed (don’t know if the female is the same). I see them swooping at each other around all the buildings (barn swallows). Do they attack each others nests? We had a couple of ground squirrels around the building but I don’t think they could scale the wall, although they might be able to hang from the porch cover. I’m assuming they were males because the bird that’s left doesn’t sing. Thank you.

  24. Excellent shots – our locals are built under a drainage dam so there is no way to get underneath. Nice to see the nests for once!
