Weekend Visitors
Young Naturalist J glad to be banding again!!
We had more visitors at the Northern Saw-whet Owl banding station this evening than owls! I need to high-five Grace 🙂 for helping locate our 70th bird of the season (in the mist net) and then allowing me to barrow a book that I need to read. Mike and Terry decided to head home early after banding our first 2 fluff balls (thanks for visiting). Grace left only minutes before we captured our 3rd bird and then recaptured the 2nd bird again (The owl must be net happy).

We were able to get Young Naturalist J out to the banding station this weekend (finally) and of course he kept me awake much longer than I would have normally stay up banding! We finally closed the nets up at 2:30am due to the temperatures dropping and was only able to catch 3 different individuals. I anticipate tomorrow being a better night with northern winds pushing through the area (but then again I was wrong about yesterday!)!
Ok, off to bed everyone . . . . Good night and don’t let the bed bugs bite!

Now that is one happy youngster! If you look at the pics of the owl posted on 11/2 and all the others…Is there a chance it could be cross-eyed?

yea! We are so happy that the weather finally cooperated on a weekend and Young Naturalist J got to band again and that there were plenty of owls. Thank you.

I’ve been wondering where J’s been! Glad he was able to make it out and the owls were cooperating. And Grace, too! Yay!

That’s one happy naturalist. You must really, really, love doing this to stay out in the cold and up until 2:30 AM. I can say I stayed up one night watching a caterpillar turn into a chrysalis until those hours (but I was nice and warm.)

There really is something about these owls that makes me want to hold one. I think I’d be smiling is broadly as Young Naturalist J here.

@ Powerbirder – we all were happy but for sure he was happy with this fluff ball! I didn’t notice anything different when it had its eyes open!
@ Banderparents – It was great having someone doing all the banding for me! Anytime for sure!
@ Pam – I so agree and only wished we had a few more owls!
@ Erie – their were many happy naturalist their! It was very cold out their last night! Brrr
@ Marg – 🙂 and I agree with you coming out! I am off all next week and birds are starting to slow down!

Tom– I just finished a 900 mile roadtrip. I’m not ready for another, longer one. Dang. Sure do love those Saw-whets!

I’m always speechless when it comes to your owl shots. Just beautiful! I have a little bird I was wondering if you could ID for me. I’m sure it is some kind of Nuthatch, but it’s definitely smaller than the ones I’m used to seeing. I’ll post it on my blog by tomorrow.

Saw-whets…sweetness wrapped in fluff.
The hot news around here is the record number of saw-whets being netted in Indiana. 175 in two counties. The banders are all in a tizzy, let me tell you.
