Some FOYs
By: Pat Coate
We finally got some spring-like weather with the sun making an appearance (brief as it turns out) and temps reaching the 70s. Inspired by seeing my first of year (FOY) Common Yellowthroat Warbler in the back yard, I decided to take my FOY bike ride to enjoy the weather and see what birds might also be out and about. I got an hour+ ride in with about 20 species seen before getting stranded under a bridge waiting out a downpour. In my 20 species I did pick up a couple more FOYs: Chipping Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow and Grey Catbird.
The pictures were taken during the bike ride.
The rest of the list:
Cardinal, Blue Jay, Mourning Dove
Starling, Common Grackle, Red-wing Blackbird
Canada Goose, Hooded Merganser, American Goldfinch
American Robin, Great Blue Heron, Northern Flicker
Downy Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, American Crow
Black-capped Chickadee, Song Sparrow
Pigeon (hung out with them under the bridge during the rain)

I love the Catbirds! I’m always so glad when they return in the spring!

Other than the robins, haven’t seen any of those birds around here yet!

Ran across your site on someone else’s. I’ve been raising Monarch’s ..released 85 last year and 18 so far this year. Nice header. Oh and I love your little helper stocking the trout.

Love the pics of the song sparrow. We seem to have an influx of field sparrows this year. Haven’t seen one yet, but I am hearing them more than the song sparrows.
