Scenes from Saturday
By: Pat Coate
I drove out to Randolph this past Saturday and these are some of the scenes from my day. It was a rather dreary day but I found some sights to brighten it.
Maybe from my days of living in the Sunflower State or maybe because they provide such a good source of food for birds, for whatever reason sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers. In Kansas we would see big fields just filled with sunflowers in full bloom – it is still such a joyful sight.
My drive started with this pair of bald eagles perched above the Allegheny River.
I spent about an hour at Swamp Road in Randolph. There was a bald eagle there too and this Northern Harrier. Thanks to Joe M. for helping with the ID as I had left my Peterson guide at home. The white ‘rump’, turkey vulture-like wing positioning, and behavior flying over the wetlands were dead on with the description in Peterson.

Gorgeous Pat! Just like the eagle pics you took by the Elk River – a bit closer though! Wish I had been there. Love the sunflowers too, definitely some sunshine for a dreary day.
