Deer Watching

White-tailed Deer
White-tailed Deer

I was delighted to find some White-tailed Deer lounging around in Allegany State Park today. When I first approached they were feeding in a wet spot in the woods. Anticipating them running away . . . they did the absolute opposite and one at a time laid down in the snow. I happen to be in the right position to capture a few pictures before thanking them and waving good bye. I love sunny days like this!

  1. Adorable; I’ve been seeing quite a few around here, too, including what seem to be yearlings playing in the snow.

So many deer! Are you have problems with your deer population? One of my favorite nature preserves just determined they have lost the pink lady slipper, hasn’t appeared for three years now, and they’re attributing it in part to the deer. It seems to be a real dilemma.

  5. Really great pictures of white tails. I always find it interesting how docile deer can be, and you can approach them without frightening them if you are in the right frame of mind. I usually talk to them as I take their pictures. We have an albino deer around here, I have as yet to get a good picture though.

  6. @ Wren – Thanks your are soo wonderful! Shouldn’t be too long before more little ones are running around!
    @ Three – thanks
@ Bo – certain spots you can see it more than others! But wish we did have more ground shrub’s but the deer take care of whatever grows!
    @ Kallen – thanks
@ Robert – Thanks and hope you are able to get that show of the albino!

  8. Lovely pictures of the deer. I was deer watching this morning myself. Watching them eat my neighbors plants. Some people never learn to plant only things the deer don’t care to eat.

  9. Tom–breathtakingly lovely photos. How interesting that they lay down to watch you instead of running away. Maybe not a good thing–over-familiarity with humans, loss of fear?

  13. White-tailed Deer are very shy, although they rarely run from vehicles here in Kitchener, Ontario.

Oh my gosh. What a wonderful sight. It is good that you had presence of mind to take the photos. I probably would have been so excited I would have forgotten to take the pictures. I love the one of them lying there in the dappled sunlight. That alone is a rarity.

  19. My uncle made me eat Sloppy Joes, then later told me it was deer meat. I was mad! He kept joking all night that I ate Bambi, but I wasn’t laughing. What a sneaky mean hunter he is. LOL! Your photos are wonderful, I would never eat them on purpose.
