Sorry for posting more birds on sumac pictures . . . . “Sumac” seems to be where all the birdies have been over the past few weeks!

I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.

Tom- Great photos. For some reason, there isn’t that much staghorn sumac around central Ohio. I’ve eaten the sumac fruits, they are a little tangy, and I can see why the birds like them too. Great shots. I’m enjoying your posts.

All our sumac disappeared from around our house years ago–replaced by poplars and other years. So, now I miss them because of your great photos.

Why do I never see a single bird eating Sumac? That little Downy forgot his bib 😉 Sumac all over his face – LOVE these colorful pictures!

I have a big patch of staghorn sumac in my backyard, but I can’t say that I’ve ever seen many birds eating there. Do you suppose it’s because I have enough birdfeeders in my backyard that the sumac isn’t needed by my backyard birds?

The colours are glorious in this series of a Woodpecker and Sumac. In this season of white I find it amazing to find so much red highlighting winter pictures, both food and birds. The best food must come in that colour, yummy red sumac, yummy red berries!

I noticed one day that some birds, primarily American Robins, decided to ravage my crabapples and ornamental holly berries within a week. A couple of weeks later they were eating the sumac.-I guess they just know the best time to consume them.

I just took a second long look at these pictures as photos, rather than for the birds. I love the combination of bronze and red tones with the black & white bird.
