  1. We heard a Black-billed Cuckoo and saw an Indigo Bunting on the nature hike we took at the Pilgrimage. I had never heard a Cuckoo bird before so I was excited to hear it. I wish I could have spotted it, though.

  3. Great photos once again. I like the veery the most.

  4. Wonderful!! Cuckoo numbers seem up a LOT in my area, maybe because of the explosion of 17-yr cicadas last year…

  5. I love the buntings. They are such beautiful birds. I never get to see them up close, unfortunately.

Love the shot of the Cuckoo Tom. I’ve only ever seen one and he didn’t sit still long enough for me to even swing the camera in his direction!

  8. Indigo buntings are one of my long list of favorites! I like the in flight pose of the eastern kingbird, frozen in time and in the air!

  9. I like the kingbird shot the best. The slightest hint of action with the flight. Nice.

  10. Hi Mon@arch,
I’ve been away from the Internet for about two weeks, and I’m just now catching up with posts of my favorite bloggers.

These are exciting photos for me. I’ve never seen a cuckoo or an indigo bunting. Your photos are great. I feel like I should ask you for a birding certificate after I read your blog for another year.

  11. @ Linda – how much fun and the Cuckoo’s are very neat birds! I hear many more than see!
@ Liza – Thanks and was a fun bird!
@ Joan – thanks and I captured a side view of it also!
@ Birdfreak – thanks and maybe it was because of the cicadas. I know our tent caterpillars numbers are up . . . they will feed on them!
@ Scienceguy – thanks and they are fun to see up close!
@ Adam – thanks and I know there are many birds that I would love to find in your area!
@ Scherri – thanks and they are not easy to photograph!
@ Chicago – thanks and I kinda liked that kingbird shot also! I almost didn’t include it!
@ Lana – thanks and glad you enjoyed it!
@ Caroline – missed you and I am trying to catch up with many blogs after a long weekend!

Marvelous birds Mon@rch. I haven’t seen a Black-billed cuckoo yet this year. Hmmmmmmm

  13. So that’s what a real live cuckoo looks like. :-}

  14. @ Lisa – thanks and I am still waiting for my first yellow-billed!

  15. Veerys are huge favorites of mine! When I was a kid, before I knew what I was hearing, I called them “xylophone birds” because the way their calls sound. We haven’t heard any here yet.

First time I saw a Veery I was disappointed. I had been looking for the birdie with the beautiful song, and he was a LBJ.
