Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.

When we lived in the Texas Panhandle, north of Amarillo, the Mourning cloak was our standard yard butterfly.
I always enjoy seeing them. Thanks for sharing.

Oh! So pretty! I loved the turtle looking at the ducks, too =)
The hawks were back at Fenway Park today, joining in the Opening Day festivities!

Oh yes, the Colt’s Foot. We were out walking this afternoon, and I also got pictures of this little flower. I always look for it appearing among the first in spring.

We saw our first Mourning Cloak this weekend. They are such beautiful butterflies. It is just amazing to see one pop out during a warm winter day. They waited until spring this year. We also had a suflur and a Cabbage White. If it stops raining and dries out some hard telling what we might find.

I haven’t seen my first of any of these yet! Beautiful pics though. Are you one of those New Yorkers who lives in that weird area where there are Red Sox fans?

The Mourning Cloak stands out nicely on that textured rock background. I never heard of colt’s foot before so maybe I’ll find some on my own.

I saw my first about a month ago – but it was on my GARAGE FLOOR! Not worth a picture in that ugly place. Your picture is lovely!

Tom things are happening fast here, the wildflowers are really exploding and the creeks and falls have got a bunch of water.
I took a hike this morning and the bird activity is amazing, especially the gooble of the wild turkeys. Anybody who has never witnessed the mating calls of the turkey is really missing something 🙂

@ Lisa – How great and I had to get out to find some butterflies! I have been hearing reports from many on them seeing some! Will be a little while until I see the sulfurs and Cabbage Whites!

Yes, spring is really here for good, right? I’ll bet we get one more snow, though.
We went for a walk today and didn’t see any flowers. 😦
But the weather was perfect and we saw plenty of bluebirds, my favorite bird. 🙂

I caught sight of a mourning cloak too.. wicked! My favorite shot? hands down; “Painted Turtle (CHECK) watching Mallards” He really looks like he’s checking them out! That is such an awesome photograph!
