My life is about living with nature – here you can live it with me!

Before the Snow Melted!

White-tailed Deer
White-tailed Deer about to run from me.

This weekend the Deer were feeding on bright green grass which was peaking through the snow! The Raccoons were breaking through the thin ice and fishing for things along the streams edge ! Birds have slowed down at the bird feeders and are now finding seeds elsewhere!! Well, after record high temperatures (60°F) today . . . . the snow has significantly melted away and now they have even more opportunities to find food! Can you believe its mid January with such warm temperatures? Expect even more warmer temperatures tomorrow!!

I had a fun chickadee video that I wanted to include but I was unable to get it uploaded (1KB/sec = 240 minutes of upload time!)!! I tried 5 times but it kept on stalling on me,!! Maybe I can get it posted for everyone tomorrow??

This is crazy January weather. The only good things about it was that walking the dog was a great pleasure and I didn’t feel sad about taking down the christmas decorations since it felt like spring. We had the windows open all day. The house smells so fresh. aaaaahhhh.

  2. It’s nice having a reprieve from the wicked cold we had last week! Hope you get the video loaded tomorrow!

  3. Please try the funny Chickadee photo again :o) Love the deer shot.

I’m sure you are enjoying the tropical heat wave up there. How would you like 70 today? Come to Charlotte. Warmer tomorrow – after teens last week. This cold I have will never go away…

  4. The freeze/thaw cycle is tough on the roads around here. 40s all day around here today; more of the same expected tomorrow. Maybe I WILL get the remainder of the deck shovelled!

  5. WOW! That is warm. What is up with that?

I love the look on the deer’s face…seems to be wondering if you are trouble.

  6. I’m loving this warm weather but I know it will not last.
My feeders have slowed down also. The animals may be loving it but not the skiers.

  7. I do NOT like this warm streak, here in mid-January in the northeast U.S.
Frankly, it scares me–further evidence that we humans (and whatever else) are changing our planet’s weather.

  8. @ Lisa – This weather is crazy! It wasn’t warm enough to open my windows but maybe tomorrow it will be!

@ Zen – nice to have some warmer weather and nice on my gas bill !
@ Trixie – Just a warm spell moving through! It took off just as I took this shot!
@ Toni – thanks and I am a skier!! I have yet to get out this year!
@ KGMom – Has already happened, just don’t want it to get worse that it is already!

  9. I thoroughly enjoyed the weather today and went for a walk in the park. Nothing like warm weather to get a person up off the couch. It was nice to see so many people out walking their dogs.

Great shot! The warm weather was quite nice! It got up to 63 here in Iowa over the weekend.

  11. I am enjoying the warm weather. Not many birds at the feeders here either, but it is a small price to pay for being able to walk. lol

Yeah this weather makes no sense! It’s like I say “If you don’t believe in global warming, fine! Now go shovel that rain.”

  13. What a stunningly beautiful capture, Tom! I am amazed at how you get such great animal shots. 🙂

  14. Great shot Tom, don’t get too used to it 🙂

  15. That’s a great deer picture, Tom. I could tell it wanted to stamp its foot at you.
Our possums are out in the daytime, and my mom had a skunk out at her place last week, but no raccoons yet.

  16. @ Erie – this weather has been crazy! I agree that it was perfect walking weather.
@ Moe – thanks and also breaking records?
@ threecollie – thanks and a perfect price to pay if I say!
@ Tomek – Love that, “Go shovel the rain”!
@ Ladybug – thanks and just need to be out looking for them!
@ Bernie – thanks and they are already telling us about snow that is coming!
@ Ruthie – thanks and I love when they do that! Although, this one was more than sure it was going to run from me! Any pictures of the skunk or opossum?? Actually I had two Raccoons but one escaped the camera before getting its pictures! I would have followed but didn’t have time! So, we got a tail shot!

  17. I wonder what the animals think about our strange weather? I love your deer picture and that raccoon looks well fed! It is nice to have a break from winter 🙂

  18. I’ve been enjoying your photos… they are very tender. I visit your blog at least once a day, just for a glimpse of nature. Thank you.

  19. Grace

I got to take a nice walk in sneakers & a sweater. Enjoyed the mild, spring-like day.

    8 January 2008 at 10:55 pm

  20. Great shot of the deer.

Many in Ozarks paid a price for that unseasonably warm weather. Fortunately, our immediate vicinity was spared the severe weather.

  21. Wonderful pix–particularly the deer, which can be SO fleet footed that they’re often gone by the time I get my camera to my eye!
Glad your temps are up! We’re still around 70F, ourselves. Enjoy. 🙂

@ Grace – thanks and it was nice!

  24. I think there should be a rule that if it’s cold — there has to be snow. The white stuff is magical and makes it all bearable.

Although, must admit, two days of 75 here were splendiferous. Thanks for the furry deer and Ricky’s backside- nice winter treats.

  25. I was amazed by the temperatures around here – but I was enjoying them, too! Makes a good excuse to play hooky and go birding!

@ TR – thanks and it has been a wonderful winter treat!
@ Marty – Sure does and I am catching myself itching to find things while working!
@ Marg – sure is, thanks! Goodness, winds were bad!
