Day Before the Storm (part 1) Waterfowl

Common Merganser

Common Merganser Pair

Today was a wonderful day with 43 species and a ton of photos. I decided to spit the post up between waterfowl (part 1) and non waterfowl (part 2).

Red House Lake had a good majority of the species today. The 4 Common Loons, 4 Scaup species, 2 Red-breasted Merganser and a Northern Shoveler were the highlighted birds. I also saw the more common waterfowl like 3 Bufflehead, 6 Common Merganser, 4 Pied-billed Grebe, Mallard and Canada Goose swimming around.

Science Lake had 2 Common Mergansers, 2 Hooded Mergansers and 2 Mallards.

I quickly headed over to Quaker Lake with 4 Woodducks, 17 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Buffleheads, 4 Scaup species, and Canada Goose. Also had a young Bonapart’s Gull flying around which I was happy to find.

Was a wonderful waterfowl day and I sure hope many of these birds stick around for my BOS count tomorrow!!

  1. Sounds like you had a great day – I’m looking forward to part 2! I love the shot of the merganser pair – you don’t often see them out of the water. Pretty much all our snow is melted – looks like you still have some. Bring on the warm weather!

  4. Good luck tomorrow! The nor’easter is dumping several inches of snow an hour north of us in the mountains. I hope you are spared so you can send us more views!
