Day Before the Storm (part 1) Waterfowl
Common Merganser Pair
Today was a wonderful day with 43 species and a ton of photos. I decided to spit the post up between waterfowl (part 1) and non waterfowl (part 2).
Red House Lake had a good majority of the species today. The 4 Common Loons, 4 Scaup species, 2 Red-breasted Merganser and a Northern Shoveler were the highlighted birds. I also saw the more common waterfowl like 3 Bufflehead, 6 Common Merganser, 4 Pied-billed Grebe, Mallard and Canada Goose swimming around.
Red-breasted Merganser and Hooded Merganser
Science Lake had 2 Common Mergansers, 2 Hooded Mergansers and 2 Mallards.
Ring-necked Ducks then in flight on Quaker Lake
I quickly headed over to Quaker Lake with 4 Woodducks, 17 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Buffleheads, 4 Scaup species, and Canada Goose. Also had a young Bonapart’s Gull flying around which I was happy to find.

Was a wonderful waterfowl day and I sure hope many of these birds stick around for my BOS count tomorrow!!

Sounds like you had a great day – I’m looking forward to part 2! I love the shot of the merganser pair – you don’t often see them out of the water. Pretty much all our snow is melted – looks like you still have some. Bring on the warm weather!

Good luck tomorrow! The nor’easter is dumping several inches of snow an hour north of us in the mountains. I hope you are spared so you can send us more views!

@ Matt – Thanks and was a great day! They breed here and believe it or not but they nest in the trees like the woodducks!
@ Ruth, thanks and love them also!
@ Larry – thanks and they are all over the place right now!
@ Mary – day wasn’t as good and weather did suck! But did get a few birds! Not over yet but will try for a few more before the day is over!
@ Liz – sweet! They are such great birds!
