Been busy the past two evenings to post anything on the blog! So, I am just going to post this picture of a Downy Woodpecker which I photographed today during my lunch break!
That’s a beautiful picture of one of my favorite back yard friends! The downies in my yard seem to be pairing up and chasing. Do you think that’s territorial behavior over food or mating behavior?
Oh, so sweet. I hope to see a Downy Woodpecker one day… On your lunch hour, you see a gorgeous woodpecker and on my lunch hour, I see a lot of birdless trees. LOL!
@ Nature Woman – us nature photographers call it luck!
@ Laura – thanks!
@ Lynne – Could be both! I should pull out my stokes behavior books and see the dates are of the Downy Woodpeckers in starting territorial behaviors!
@ Mary – hope you get the chance one day, they are cute little birdies! Tree’s can be just as much fun as the birds! Keep on looking and those woodpeckers will make an appearance.
They are so darn cute-all of them. There is a downy male in the park who is always first to the food, (banded by us) we feed on a rock, and he comes up looking back and forth all the way up and talking at the same time-he cracks me up!
Just came by to thank you for your comments on Dharma Bums, and am blown away by your photography. Wow. Your nuthatch photos and this downy are just spectacular. I will stop by more often. It is a treat to see the world you are looking at.
@ Marg – these Downy’s are fun to watch! The one’s in my window are always putting on a show for me! Thanks!
@ Susan – thanks and glad to hear that this was the bird who got you into birding! Heck, most of us are birding fools now!
@ Robin – Blush and thanks! Love your Dharm Bums blog!
Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.
Thank you for taking the time visiting and commenting on this blog.

What a cutie. I love how clean they look. A downy at my feeders was my “spark” bird.
And now I am a birding fool.
