My life is about living with nature – here you can live it with me!

winter blues

A good birding friend once told me that he “makes it through the winter knowing the warblers will be back in the spring”! I now live by this saying; well maybe just during the winter months!

Hooded Warbler nest

Nesting Female Hooded Warbler

I figure with the shortest day of the year around the corner, why not just post a reminder of summer time fun!

I would love to hear what helps you make it through the winter months?

Wonderful picture of this bird on the nest. It is always warm here so isn’t hard to live through the winter months.

Let’s see…to make it through the winter month’s..I can build some bird houses….plot out my spring plantings…flowers, herbs, and vegetables..catch up on alot of reading…continuously work on my blogs..and once in a great while….roam outside…get a lung full of -10 degree air….look to the sky…..and ask why! Just kidding. I kind of enjoy winter though..I always remember that in a few short months, everything will be new again.

  3. My greenhouse helps me through the winter. Walks with Chet Baker. Dinner in the tower with candles. And trips to sunny hot places REALLY help. We like to do one around Thanksgiving, and one in February, and when we get back, the woodcocks are here, and spring has begun.

  4. I love the sweet warbler and her nest is a wonderful example of architecture.
Considering that winter is my favorite season…time passes too swiftly for my taste. I love following wildlife tracks on snowshoes, building snow caves and igloos, ice fishing, big blazing bonfires and snowball fights with my alaskan husky, so if fall would kindly get on it’s way we’re still waiting for winter and snow here in MN.

  5. I make it through the winter by trying to get shots of the winter waterfowl down at the shore. But I sit at work, inside, wondering if I’ll add a couple new warblers to my list…

    Only 3 months until spring!

  6. I make it through the winter by … going birding and hiking when it’s not raining courtesy of our mild SF climate 😉 or going XC skiing or snowshoeing in the Sierras.

Of course it’s been raining for a few days here, and I haven’t done anything outdoors at all, arggh!

@ TT Trees – sounds like a great way to spend the winter with snowshoes, ect!! You can be sure once the snow gets deep enough that I will be doing the same!
@ Marty – no doubt that I will be taking pictures but I only wish they were half as good as your shots!
@ Adam – Ya ya, keep on reminding me about the warm weather in CA!! I can’t wait to see some of your new pictures or updates on your blog!

I kindof like Winter, a great time to catch up on reading, for example maybe I’ll get to learn all the warblers by the time I need to 😀

And we haven’t had any snow yet, so it doesn’t even feel like winter to me.

  9. Marg – how wdonerful and you know that I find myself trying to relearn those warbler songs again! ugg, so easy to forget their voices!

  10. I tend to agree with the idea of warblers in spring helping me get through the winter. Some winters can be pretty rough in northern Illinois. Today it is 52 degrees. Two weeks ago we had a foot of snow. And it isn’t even officially winter yet. Go figure.
