Pileated Woodpecker at the Banding Station

Had a Pileated Woodpecker at the MAPS banding station here in Allegany State Park this weekend. First bird of the season and boy was it an outstanding bird!!! This was also my first Pileated Woodpecker ever caught in one of my Mist-nets. Exciting times!

  1. Oh, WOW!! Look at the size of that bird! He is just beautiful. I have a fascination for the Pileated Woodpecker and am extremely envious of your opportunity to get up close and personal with one. ~karen

I had the pleasure of seeing a pileated woodpecker up close at Rockland State Park last Saturday. It was just hanging out close to the ground and I was able to just stand there and watch it. I tried to take pictures but, as luck would have it, I did not have my camera with me that day…only my cell phone. Seeing this bird just made my day 🙂

  5. The Pileated is such a majestic bird. Love ’em! We live on a river in the woods in northern Michigan & they come to feed on our suet feeders since 1997, even bring their babies to feed off them. Their ‘call’ sounds like a jungle bird. Most of the time they do their ‘call’ before they go to the feeder, let’s us know their here. I have taken tons of photos of them. They like the large size of the ‘Tail Prop’ feeder we get from Duncraft.com. I look forward to following your blog.
