Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.
Thank you for taking the time visiting and commenting on this blog.

If you are wondering, that’s Red House Creek running in the background from all our rain/snow melt the past few days!

Goodness you got so close to the deer. It must have been becasue the creek noise disguised the noise of your arrival.
This reminds me about seeing all the deer this weekend. The largest herd I have ever seen. 20+ at one time. Also saw the most Wild Turkeys in a flock this weekend. 80+ turkeys in a field. These huge numbers within a mile of each other. Obviously no hunters in this area.

Dear always look so graceful to me but did you notice how knock-kneed they look when they walk away from you? Nice video!

Lovely.

Wonderful. Such graceful & powerful jumpers!

Yes, they do look knocked-kneed! I like how they stand and stare, eyeing you up. Beautiful they way they finally had enough and fled with those white tails bopping. Loved this video.

Their color blends so well with the background color. They sure are graceful creatures (especially apposed to the possum from yesterday.) I love that huge white tail at the end of the video. Great video!

@ Lisa – I got fairly close but not as close as I do at the house! I just liked how many there were! Very cool seeing so many deer/turkey this weekend!
@ Lynne – they sure can at times! Thanks
@ Liza – thanks
@ Lana – thanks and they are for sure!
@ Mary – They always do stare some and I also love the park with them running away! Reminds me of something from 60 minutes!
@ Linda – they sure do and they have great white tails! I need to get some background music though! The stream was just a little too much!

Where do you find your subjects! You have the midas touch of seeing animal gold!

All of the above have already commented the same remarks I was going to make — especially about how close they seemed to be, and not hearing you, yet they were aware of something near them. They looked so wary. And then when they took off, all their tails were straight up. Gosh, it seems that their beautiful white tails do them an injustice, causing them to be targets for hunters.

Gosh Tom, some of those fawns were still pretty small yet. It’s good that their moms are still looking out for them and giving them the signal when it’s time to run away.

Oh, that was so peaceful! I could watch that over and over! Music would be nice =)
6 February 2008 at 5:33 pm
I can’t believe how much noise the creek is making. Even so, it’s nice to hear it! Love the deer video – what finally scared them away? Certainly not you!
6 February 2008 at 6:46 pm
@ TR – Well thanks but where else but out in the woods!
@ Mary – they were fairly close and they knew I was there! Vehicles make a wonderful blind and do note this was around Red House Lake where it is a hunt free zone (part of the ability to get closer to them)! Although, trust me when I till you that too many deer and you will have many other biological problems! Hunters are not all that bad!
@ Ruthie – they are surviving and great they are out feeding! That field is all covered with water now and we have been getting flooding!
@ Rondi – thanks and only wish I had some copyright free music! I should look into some one of these days! Last I looked would cost me around $500!

Pam – LOL, I was right (right) next to it and boy was it running at that point! No, it was me! The one moved in closer for a better look (off to the side of the camera) and then just ran! Others followed!

I kept waiting for a tail to be raised to display the white ‘alarm flag’, and I was surprised that you were able to film so long before it happened. Congratulations on a great video capture.

It seems like they knew you were there…a little on alert but not too much. Thanks for this vid, I needed to see some life today. (cold and lifeless here).

I love when they all look at you-it’s like they said “he seems harmless let’s get back to eating!”
Course they were right!
7 February 2008 at 4:44 pm
@ Naturespalette – they knew I was there for sure! Thanks and good luck with your lifers!
@ Deena – thanks and they were trying to raid my feeders today! Grr! Thanks and you just couldn’t see the deer on the left who ran was checking out my truck! I might have moved my head looking at it, but was me for sure! Thanks and also glad you found me!
@ Chicago – thanks and my inspiration was the 60minutes clips at the end of the show!
@ Lisa – glad you saw this and thanks for your kind words!
@ Marg – LOL and that is exactly what they were doing!

I always love to see deer.-My favorite part is when they look right straight at you.Who was the director of the film? -Good job!

This is amazing. One of my favorite all time hobbies is looking online to see how truly different deer look in other states. One question? How big are these deer? They are really beautiful. But yeah – a few differences exist – like the knees – the size of the ears and the legs are shorter then the ones I normally see oh and that amazingly thick looking tail. Thank you for sharing this! I’m thrilled it was a video.
