Groundhogs Day Eve
This is worse than Christmas; how does one prepare for the night before Ground Hogs Day which also falls on a Full Moon?

Welcome to the mon@rch nature blog and I hope you join us in some of our nature adventures through the Allegany State Park area!
I am a naturalist, field biologist and nature photographer from the Western New York area. I have started exploring nature writing through this blog and it truly has been fun sharing my numerous adventures with everyone. Thanks to the many other authors that help me with my post and they will be sharing some of their nature explorations.
I have always had a latent interest in birds and photography and have been lucky enough to find time to explore these interests over the last few years. I am very thankful to the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for getting me started, sharing their wealth of knowledge and for their wonderful programs. And many thanks to Tom for letting me share some of my adventures and photos on the Monarch Nature Blog.
Thank you for taking the time visiting and commenting on this blog.

Well, I don’t know, lots of things come to my mind, but my mind is always working overtime!
The question is, what are you doing? π

Ummm…..to prepare for Groundhog’s Day. Do you have to wrap gifts? Do you drink wine and giggle? Is there some kind of Victorian poem you read the children? I guess I don’t know, either.

Ditto Pam’s comment: What are you doing to prepare? π

Groundhogs day is the unofficial first day of spring! Birds start to act differently, weather starts to show improvement and the sun appears to be out longer! No gifts, although wine is an option and poems are an option! This is the day when the Mr. Woodchuck wakes up from hibernation and starts to search for Ms Woodchuck! Mr. Woodchuck then has the option to look around for its shadow!! If it sees it then it knows that winter will continue for 6 more weeks (and heads back to bed)! If it doesn’t see its shadow, it knows spring will be early and heads out of its cave! My favorite holiday of the year for sure!

I’m not looking forward to his waking up and raiding my garden!

Thanks Barb! Just glad that I didn’t have to go through your sticky situation today!

Laura – Ugg, I know Allegany Tom (me) isn’t planning on waking up early!

Twas the Night before Groundhog’s Day
And all through the lawn
The ground hog was stirring
And stifling a yawn
He’d been in that hole
In his jaunty woolen cap
And totally pissed
At all the people disturbing his nap!
That’s all I got…time to take the cough syrup.

Good poem, Susan π We had a resident ground hog once. We had a nice vegetable garden, a small stream of water 10 feet away from it, and a shed nearby. He had food, water, and shelter. But I had a dog. And those beady little eyes on Frank (we named him Frank) scared me. My neighbor captured Frank and took him to a very large pond 3 miles away. Two months later, Frank was back. A very persistent fellow…
