Birdfreak Visit

birdfreak team and I
Birdfreak, Little Kingfisher, Ed’s Father and myself

Today I had a wonderful visit by the Birdfreak Blogging Team as they passed through the area while heading to a birding festival (for Swarovski) in Rhode Island. We only had a few hours to chat but we looked for a few birds . . . Little Kingfisher (Dakota’s All Natural Experience) had the opportunity to band some baby Bluebirds . . . . and then headed up to the Thunder Rocks area to climb on some “big” rocks!! I am sure you will see many of Ed’s and Dakota’s pictures on their own blogs within the next few days (so go visit their blogs).  Little Kingfisher told me that if I didn’t go home and blog something . . . . that I would owe him $50 dollars!! I didn’t want to disappoint this great young birder (and owe him $50 bucks) . . . . so here is my blog post for the day!!   :)

Black Bear
Black Bear that I found along the side of the road

I feel bad that I encountered this Black Bear about 10 minutes after they headed East towards their next stop at the Lab of Ornithology. I really would have loved to been able to find a Black Bear for them but I guess this is every reason for them to return for another visit!!   Thanks for stopping by guys!

  • Thanks Little Kingfisher for making Tom blog-sorry you didn’t get your 50 bucks though!

Great to see all of you!

  • Tom-

Very cool. I’ve never come across a bear in my ramblings, but we do have them in eastern and southern Ohio. Its always nice to meet up with other nature bloggers, some day I will make it up to your neck of the woods to meet you and to maybe see one of these brown furry creatures that you have so nicely captured.

  • We had a bear visit our birdfeeder once. We had to take the feeders down for awhile to discourage him from coming back!

  • Doh!! Glad you found that bear but we would’ve loved to see it!!

We had a very fun time and Allegany is AWESOME!

Thank you so much Tom for showing us around. You are one cool naturalist (and warrior :)

    Cheers from Ithaca

  • Wow, a bear sighting would have been awesome! Sounds like you all had a blast, I wish I would have been along! Thanks for showing Dakota some of your awesome park! :-)

    Good birding to you!

  • How cool (on the bear & the visit!) Always nice to have an opportunity to meet net friends in “real” life, and the Birdfreak team do SUCH a great job!

Your fans are numerous and high-nature-quality. I guess a daily blog is an enormous responsibility. But everyone would be thrilled with fewer if it helps you in your work load. Just as long as you don’t disappear. Thanks for making the time.

  • Wow… Thank goodness for Birdfreak and company’s visit. I thought it would take banding a Great-crested Flycatcher before we would see another blog post!

Now I have to go visit their blogs!

  • How fun to meet fellow bloggers. Glad you all had such a good day together! :c)

  • Kingfisher, good job my man. Mr. Tom, thanks for showing this blog. It is really great.

  • Great photos Tom.. Hope your Summer is going good.

  • That’s pretty cool that you saw one in the wild like that. I’ve seen them at garbage cans where I work but never just wandering in the woods.-That must have been fun meeting up with some of the folks at birdfreak.

  • Lisa at Greenbow

Wow, I didn’t know there were black bears in your territory. That would be a treat to see.

  • Wish I could meet you all someday :)

  • whoa… didn’t expect to see a black bear below the fold! very cool!

Last time we were in Canada we did everything we could to see a bear (any type) and were unsuccessfull. Maybe I just need to go to PA instead!

  • Good stuff–sounds like you guys had a great time, and I’m glad you got a photo of the bear to share with us too.

  • Tom, I forgot to tell you. I saw my very first American Goldfinch yesterday! I had never saw one up close. It was eating on some Zennias.

  • A black bear picture worth that saved you 50 bucks – haha – very cool and gee — I kept wondering what was in that picture that I was missing!!!! Then I read the part about the black bear – sure was camo’d! Cool!

  • That is so cool that Birdfreak and family visited you. I really like the photo of all of you. I’m glad you took the time to share it with the rest of us. I sure hope you’ll be back blogging soon. I, like everyone else, miss you and your informative posts and gorgeous pictures.

  • How much fun!!!
I’m glad to see that you’re back in business.

  • With a little reading between the lines, I think I get the message here: Send in $50 and get a post. When I see the PayPal donation box, I will know that it is true. :-)

Nice shot of the bear, Tom.

  • Was it one of the orphan bear cubs? Adirondacks were pretty great, but no pix until my film is developed. See you Tuesday.

  • Nice post! Great pics! And I have been having a black bear sighting in my front yard..we are surrounded by national forest! I did get some pics posted a few weeks ago!!

I have something for you, so drop by when you get a chance!
    ENjoy your day!
Always a pleasure visiting here! (:
