Tomorrow I will be counting the birds during the 108th Christmas Bird Count in the Saint Bonaventure circle here in Cattaraugus County, NY. I have been doing this circle since 1994 and been recording for section 3 for the past 10 years now. After the count we all have dinner together and will discuss who had the best birds of the day.

Last year was a wash year due to the low numbers of birds and extreme warm temperatures. This year we are expecting a much better year with multiple possible winter finch species that we will be able to count!! If you would like to participate in a count near you, please visit this “Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count” website. Stay tuned to hear what birds this year we end up finding in the circle (even with the big storm moving our direction)!!

Please do not forget to fill your feeders for the next few weekends!

  • Hope you see lots and lots of birds!!! Good luck with the count.

  • The Christmas Bird Count is this weekend in our region too. I just have time to do a feeder watch. Will have the see the effect of the big storm the weather network is promising!

  • Mon@arch,
I’ve never participated in a bird count– my identification skills are too weak — but I love seeing birders out there. I know a 94-year-old woman who counts from her window. The whole thing seems so altruistic and caring. It is one of the few things that makes me proud to be a human being. Avanti!

Good luck on your CBC. It will be interesting to hear your results. We (My DB and I) will be doing three of them in the next two weeks. I just love to do them. Especially the ones you do year after year. The results are different every year.

  • That sounds like fun. Hope the weather doesn’t mess it up for you. I just filled the feeders today. ~Nita~

  • @ Kerri – I hope so also! Thanks
@ Ruth – You really should give your results to the CBC people! Is your house within the circle?
@ Crayons – you really should and joining others is the perfect way to improve the skills you have already! Would give you something great to color!
@ Lisa – thanks and hope it will be good! Probably will be a little later till I can get something posted but will do my best to get it up late tomorrow night or early Sunday Morning! They are different each year!
@ Nita – Sunday is when my weather will be all messed up! Thanks for filling the feeders!

  • Hope you see lots of birdies. Hope you don’t get caught in the blizzard coming our way!

  • Can’t wait to see the photos from this year’s CBC! (Speaking of filling feeders, the squirrels knocked both my feeders down and they broke! Little buggers!!!!)

  • Hey when you get a minute I’d love for you to discuss dealing with snow and feeders too. (Mine keep freezing up and filling up with snow.) Do you or any of your pals have a trick?

winter finch?? what?? okay I have more studies to attend to. I love that second shot. I officially bow to the master (especially after playing with a telephoto lens in the last month.) :o )

  • I can’t wait to see what Finches (and other things you find) sheesh ours isn’t til the 23rd! Whose idea was that?

I was just talking to a friend and she said if you listen to the Buffalo news the storm coming is the biggest “in the history of the WORLD!” I hope that’s wrong ;D

  • Oh have fun! I should have read our audubon’s newsletter I forgot about the Christmas bird count. The last storm passed us over some but we have a bad one coming tonight.
So thanks for the reminder I need to buy bird seed.

  • I wish our count was this early. Our is next Saturday and our area is right near some shopping malls. The traffic is nuts. Good luck…can’t wait to hear what you find.

  • There was a bird count this morning at Presque Isle but I slept in until 9 AM. I’m not a morning person. As Toni stated we are in for a big snow storm tonight and am filling the feeders full. Birds must know there is a storm coming, there are huge numbers at the feeders this morning.

  • Man, I need to get involved in a bird count. They sound great…

  • Good luck with the count – I hope you find multiple finches AND some redpolls to boot!

  • Have fun and here is wishing you a large, large number. Good reminder about keeping the feeders filled, they need our help! :)
    Good luck!

  • In northwest Ohio they’re getting so much snow that some CBC’s are being postponed this weekend….best of luck to you in New York finding some great birds.

  • Happy counting!
Do hope you get lots of photos.
Will check in and see who came through for the count.
    Stay safe. Stay warm.
    Sherry

  • How did it go and can I help out next year? I used to do 5 counts and am too far away now to do any of them…

  • Thanks everyone . . . you all are soo kind! We had a good day and still trying to catch up with things! Going to another Christmas Party today!

@ Aullori – I always have my feeders facing away from the weather. I do have one feeder that does freeze up but by bringing it inside each night the problem has gone away! But I bring it inside more for the critters than it freezing! Thanks and congrats on your telephoto!
@ Erie – sleeping in?? Not on birdcount day!
@ Tom – they are talking about it here but I believe they are still going to tough it out!

  • ahh,… thank you for the trick… if I played with the nails I could do that. Thank you Tom!

  • aullora – LOL thanks!

  • I’m on it. Did he first one this weekend but one was cancelled too.Hope you made out well.

  • Larry – I hope they reschedule it!
